GIST - A 360-degree View of News Content

GIST is pretty cool!

Created by Thomson Reuters Developer Todd Faulls, GIST leverages Reuters news and provides a highly visual take on Reuters news, combining related stories, images and video clips to quickly provide readers with a 360-degree view of context.

SemanticProxy, created by the Calais team, makes it easy to generate rich semantic metadata for individual Web pages. Simply paste the page's URL into the tool.  Programmatic use of SemanticProxy requires a Calais API key (your current Calais key will work).

The following code shows you how to extend your existing code to process the new relevance information in Calais RDF output. The attached zip file has the changed code of the JSON Java package, which includes relevance information in the full JSON representation.

The method that parses the relevance information is shown below (taken from com.clearforest.calais.full.CalaisJSONIf in the attached zip file).

REST API Call

Release 3 of Calais includes a REST interface. Download the attached code sample that uses the REST API.

The attached sample code demonstrates how to connect to Calais. Use these examples to get started with Calais, using either SOAP or REST.

This is Java and PHP sample code for JSON output format.

There are two types of output: JSON code that is based on the original detailed RDF output format, and JSON code that is based on the simple output format.

Included are two Java and two PHP format samples: in both .zip and .tar.gz files. They include code for both the client and server sides as well as documentation and the specification for how RDF was converted to JSON.

Submitting Content to Calais

If you’d like to start building simple workstreams that integrate Calais processing the command line Calais submission tool is a good starting point. The tool accepts input from STDIN, writes output to STDOUT and reads your processing parameters from a configuration file. You can download the application, source code and documentation here. Use of Calais Command Line requires a developer key and a current version (V 6) of the Java runtime environment on your machine.

The best place to start is with the Calais Document Viewer. The document viewer allows you to paste sample text and receive that text back with all entities, facts and events highlighted and navigable. You can also view the native RDF output and capture it for analysis in other tools.
